The Island

Leadership looks steady from the outside. Decisions get made. The business continues. People are paid. It reads as control. It isn’t.

In transition, leadership is not a line forward. It is a narrowing. Options reduce. Trade-offs become clearer. The outcome is often decided before it is named. From the outside, it looks like a choice. From the inside, it rarely is.

The business was built over decades, shaped by partnerships that held and, at times, didn’t. My father was never alone in it. The weight was shared. By the time it reached me, it wasn’t. People saw me as an owner before anything formalized. That comes with an expectation you don’t agree to but inherit. You carry it forward. You absorb what it requires.

For a while, I did. Through the pandemic. Through illness. After loss. Each moment asked for steadiness and reduced the margin. What doesn’t get seen is what that steadiness costs.

The structure around me changed. Partners left. Widows stepped into roles they hadn’t planned to hold. What had once been distributed landed on fewer people, and then, in practice, on one.

At the same time, my health changed. Not in a way that could be managed through effort or will. There is a version of leadership that believes it can push through anything. That version has limits. I reached it.

The decision didn’t arrive all at once. It formed under pressure, then settled into something clear. Continuing would require a trade. Health for continuity. My father had partners his whole life. I would have had an island. That difference decides more than people think.

From the outside, the decision lands as disruption, as loss, sometimes as betrayal. People feel the outcome without the context. Leadership holds both. It carries the decision and the silence around it.

There is a loneliness in it. Not because you are alone, but because the weight isn’t transferable. What you intended to carry forward will change under your watch. A legacy doesn’t always continue the way you imagined.

It would be easier if there were a single cause, a mistake, something clean to point to. More often, it is a series of necessary decisions that lead somewhere no one planned.

Leadership is not about being understood. It is about standing in the decision.
